OCCAM’S RAZOR

Occam’s Razor?! No, it’s not a band of mathematicians and philosophers. But then again, it is certainly not a band of spiky-haired punks with razorblades for earrings (not that there is anything wrong with that!). Simply put, it is a band; a conglomeration of five distinct individuals, with varying personalities, experiences and interests, who, given a mutual respect for each one’s musical ability, share songs with the mission that the individual musical parts create a greater whole. Cliché, but simply true; Occam’s Razor.

WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE?

Alan Burant (Voice, guitar, keyboards): Fired from his job at a Chartered Accountant firm for humming “The Internationale”, Alan decided to pursue his primary passion…the person who tells the time on the telephone. Realizing that there was a limited market for this, he took up music. Primarily self-taught, he still really doesn’t know what he is doing. But it seems to sound good so the others decided to keep him around anyway. The others think that his lyrics are strange. Alan just thinks that he is a pretentious twit.

Corinne Lillo (Voice, keyboards): Classically-trained on a multitude of instruments, Corinne has utilized her musical talents as a musical educator, writer of film music, and as a member of Paragon and the Glenn Gray Band. Singing songs of despair and isolation with her haunting, clear soprano voice, Corinne is, surprisingly, a very happy, content person. With a strong love of jazz vocal and rhythm and blues, Corinne has been voted the one most likely to write a song that you can dance to.

Glenn Gray (Guitars Galore, Voice): Well-known around the Edmonton area as a blues guitarist, it is with Occam’s Razor that Glenn hopes to show other facets of his playing; classical, jazz, avante-garde, heavy rock and yes (“Yes”?), even country. A graduate of the Guitar Institute of Technology, Glenn has combined his formal education with the school of hard-knocks to create a highly individual style. Blessed with a keen ear, his arranging ideas are a valuable asset to the band. Sing slightly sharp and you are going to hear from it from Glenn! He was likely Napoleon in a prior life. Good thing he is controlling a band rather than an army this time around!!

Ian Whitman (Bass): The youngest member of the band, Ian believes it is his role to be the sex-symbol. He probably has the nicest butt, anyway. Despite this, he still plays a mean bass. And wears a cool hat, tool!! Influenced by heavy rock, blues and classical sources, Ian has recently, through certain members of the band, been consuming more “out-there” influences – all musical, of-course!!! Ian thinks that the rest of the band is short.

Scott Arrison (Skin-Pounder): A well-travelled drummer and percussionist, Scott has played it all. A Deep Purple tribute band even!! (Again, not that there is anything wrong with that!) The band holds Scott in awe because he once met Bill Burford (and there is certainly nothing wrong with that…lucky #@&%!!). They also hold him in awe because he is a fine, versatile drummer who can play expressively in a wide variety of styles and rhythms. Scott has been constitutionally recognized within the band as a distinct society.
